How It Works

Tile roofs are the heaviest roofing option, weighing 900-1,500 lbs per square (100 sq ft) compared to 200-350 lbs for asphalt shingles. Your roof structure must be engineered to handle this load — always have a structural engineer verify before installing tile. Clay and concrete tiles last 50-100 years and excel in hot climates due to thermal mass. Two layers of underlayment are required under tile roofs (vs. one for shingles). Hip and ridge tiles are specialty pieces that cap the peaks and hips — budget about 3 per linear foot. Expect 10% waste on simple roofs and up to 20% on complex ones.
