How It Works

Shingles are sold in bundles, and it typically takes 3 bundles to cover one roofing square (100 sq ft). Premium designer shingles may require 4 bundles per square due to heavier weight and different overlap. Always add 10-15% for waste on simple gable roofs and up to 20-25% for complex roofs with many hips, valleys, and dormers. Starter strip shingles run along the eaves and rakes — figure about 1 bundle per 105 linear feet. Use 1.5-1.75 lbs of roofing nails per square. Architectural shingles offer better wind resistance (130 mph rated) and last 25-30 years vs. 15-20 for 3-tab.
